BRIEF PROFILE: The father of Dean and Sam Winchester, John Winchester is a former Marine and mechanic, a hunter and conartist for the majority of his life because of the death of his beloved wife Mary at the hands of a demon he spend every day after her death trying to find and destroy. His sons learned how to be hunters from him after he himself learned from others about this life that had been unknown to him before his wife's death. Because of that tragedy, he often put aside the best interests of others in favor of the 'mission' or to protect those he feared losing, at times alienating even those he cared the most about.

To save his son Dean's life, he made a deal with the Yellow-Eyed Demon (also known as Azazel) he hunted, the one responsible for his wife's death, which resulted in being sent to Hell while Dean lived. Later, when a hellgate was opened, John escaped from Hell, attacked Azazel to provide a distraction for Dean to shoot and finally kill the demon, and then was engulfed in white light. → [extended information]
